What Is Custom Metal Fabrication?
Custom metal fabrication is the process of designing, cutting, shaping, and assembling metal components to meet a specific requirement β as opposed to purchasing a standardized, off-the-shelf product. It can range from a single one-off component to a production run of identical parts.
The result can be almost anything: a custom gate, a structural bracket, a machine component, a decorative railing, a replacement part, or a completely novel device. If it can be described, drawn, or modeled, it can generally be fabricated.
The Fabrication Process
- Design and Consultation β Bring your idea, sketch, blueprint, or sample. The fabricator assesses feasibility, recommends materials, and scopes the job.
- Material Selection β Choose from carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum, or specialty alloys based on strength, corrosion resistance, appearance, and cost requirements.
- Cutting β Raw metal is cut to size using saws, plasma cutters, or shears depending on the material and thickness.
- Forming β Metal is bent, rolled, or pressed into the required shapes using press brakes and rollers.
- Welding and Assembly β Components are welded together to create the finished part or assembly.
- Finishing β Grinding, sanding, priming, painting, or coating as required by the application.
- Quality Check and Delivery β The finished piece is inspected and prepared for pickup or delivery.
Common Applications
- Architectural metalwork β staircases, railings, gates, ornamental ironwork
- Industrial components β brackets, mounts, frames, enclosures, platforms
- Structural elements β beams, columns, connections
- Equipment modifications and custom attachments
- Replacement parts for discontinued products
- Artistic and decorative metalwork
Choosing the Right Material
Carbon Steel
The workhorse of fabrication β strong, weldable, and cost-effective. Ideal for structural, industrial, and most general-purpose applications. Requires coating or paint to prevent rust in exposed or outdoor environments.
Stainless Steel
Corrosion-resistant and clean-looking. Higher cost but necessary for food service equipment, outdoor installations in coastal or wet environments, and applications where appearance matters.
Aluminum
Lightweight, corrosion-resistant, and easy to work with. Common in transportation, architectural trim, and applications where weight is a factor.
What to Bring to a Fabrication Consultation
- A sketch or drawing β even a rough one helps
- A sample of the original part (for replacements)
- Dimensions, tolerances, and load requirements if known
- The environment where the part will be used (indoor, outdoor, wet, high-temp)
- Your timeline and budget range
